Our Best Favorites to Win the CFP
Alabama Crimson Tide (+210): The return isn't great. And they won it all last season despite just getting into the CFP by the skin of their teeth. They had some losses on defense, but since when are there not studs to seamlessly fill in voids? The offense could be harder to stop and we're at a point in time where not accounting for the Tide is simply a mistake.
Clemson Tigers (+450): The defense could be special with a defensive line that is on another level. While that aspect of their game has gotten a lot of attention, let's not forget Clemson has become a magnet for huge talent on the heels of recent big-time success and look for some more playmaking on the other side of the ball to manifest, as well. Look for the Tigers to be making a lot of noise in January again this season.
Georgia Bulldogs (+800): On one hand, they lost a lot in their best defensive player in Roquan Smith, along with two NFL-level backs. Coach Kirby Smart has done a fine job recruiting and it's "next one up" now at Georgia where the talent on their roster is extreme. They remain strong around all areas and figure to be back in the thick again this January.
Our Best Middle-of-the-Road Picks to Win the CFP
Washington (+1500): Coach Chris Petersen is onto something at UW and with Jake Browning back behind center for his fourth season as a starter, they seem poised for maybe another CFP run in 2018-19. They lost some pieces, especially on the D-line and in the receiving corps, but still stand out as a strong team to be taken seriously.
Wisconsin (+2600): One drive from the College Football Playoff last season, they look to crack the 4-team rotation at the end of this upcoming season. A good Wisconsin team will run the ball and play defense and this Badgers team can do that in spades and might need to be accounted for come CFP time.
Michigan State (+3500): The youth movement came around faster than expected last season and they could be better. They held eight opponents to 17 or fewer points and a manageable schedule could play into their hands and make them an interesting darkhorse at 35-1 odds.
Our Best Longshots to Win the CFP
Texas Longhorns (+5000):< Head coach Tom Herman will need to find a lot of the right answers, especially on offense, where they didn't blossom last season. If the defense takes another step forward, they could be fairly dominant and maybe some playmakers will be created on offense.
USC Trojans (+6500): Seems like a weird time to back USC, as they're replacing a lot of key talent and are already dealing with injuries. But maybe some vast talent on the roster can manifest sooner than expected, as USC makes a little run. It's not like they haven't unexpectedly crashed the national stage before.
